The TALENT team is pleased to announce the following new courses:

Problem solving for technicians

This online workshop session will provide an introduction to various root cause analysis methods and troubleshooting concepts. 

Part 1 will allow Technicians to discover a wide range of problem solving tools that they can take away and use in their workplace. The course will equip technicians with skills to catch the small items before they turn into big issues. There will also be examples of how to approach major root cause investigations. 

Part 2 will run through some case studies related to technical activities: a look at how a technician might go about troubleshooting problems in programming code, reviewing minor issues in technical team and problem solving major quality escapes in a lab. The workshop attendees are invited to bring their own issues and see if others can share their experiences and help. 

Key learning outcomes:

  • To learn the principles of root cause analysis 
  • To profile ten different tools and methods and practice these 
  • To provide a decision making route for choosing which tool(s) are best for your problem  
  • To see technical activity case studies relevant to various Technicians’ workplaces 
  • Provide an opportunity to network (virtually) and have peer and inter-institutional support and learning

Risk management for technicians

This online workshop session will provide an introduction into how organisations manage risk and how this could apply to a Technician’s workplace 

Part 1 will answer the question “What is risk?” and “What is risk management?” It will provide an opportunity to develop the Technician’s understanding of business risks – how this is enacted in their technical workplace and how this fits with the big picture of their organisation (strategy, contingency planning, risk management framework). The course will equip Technicians with skills to do their own risk analysis work. 

Part 2 will introduce the Swiss Cheese Model and the Bow Tie technique. There will be a chance to practice these new business risk management skills and discuss with others how Technicians will apply the lessons in their technical workplace.
