Getting started with coaching techniques 

 

This workshop is designed to introduce you to coaching, what it is and some coaching skills and techniques. We will introduce two commonly used coaching frameworks that you can put into practice with those you work with. This workshop will include the use of breakout rooms for you to share your thoughts and to practice techniques with others from across the eight Midlands Innovation Universities.  

 

There is some pre-session work for you to complete before the workshop, this is to help everyone to get the most out of the live session.  

 

Target Audience: Any member of staff who is interested in applying coaching techniques in their interactions with others. 

 

In this session we will: 

  • Discuss the use of questioning and listening in coaching
  • Introduce two frameworks which can be used in a coaching conversation
  • Practice coaching skills in a safe learning environment

 

Location: Online 

Duration: 90 minutes 

Approximately: 30 minutes pre-session activity  

Related sessions: This session can be complemented with the “Coaching practice session” workshop. You should complete this workshop (Getting started with coaching techniques) before attending the practice session.

Coaching practice session 

 

This workshop is designed to complement the “Getting started with coaching techniques” workshop and will give you the chance to further practice coaching techniques learnt in that workshop. There will be an emphasis on practicing coaching techniques in breakout rooms with others from across the eight Midlands Innovation Universities, rather than on listening to a presentation full of information. There is no pre-session work required before the workshop. 

 

Please only attend this workshop if you have previously attended “Getting started with coaching techniques” or an equivalent course within your home institution.

The prior learning required for this workshop is as follows: 

  • Knowledge of what coaching is and how it differs to mentoring
  • Ability to practice active listening
  • Ability to ask open coaching questions
  • Awareness of GROW coaching model
  • Awareness of the “wheel of life” coaching tool

 

Target Audience: Any member of staff who is interested in applying coaching techniques in their interactions with others and meets the prior learning requirements. 

 

In this session we will: 

  • Introduce other tools that could be used within a coaching conversation
  • Practice coaching skills and tools in a safe learning environment

 

Location: Online 

Duration: 90 minutes 

Related sessions: This session is designed to follow the “Getting started with coaching techniques” workshop. You should complete that session (or an equivalent workshop) before attending this practice session.
