Guest Blog: Emily rounds up the first week of the Festival of Learning

It was been a busy first week of MI Talent’s first ever Festival of Learning, with more than 70 technicians joining us for online workshops.

How to hold effective meetings
On Thursday morning, Sandy Sparks led a session on how to hold effective meetings and tips on having the confidence to chair meetings. Participants had the chance to discuss one of seven different themes in breakout rooms before sharing these with everyone else over the course of the workshop.

Top tips included making sure everyone is clear on the purpose of the meeting (and you’re not having a meeting when another method of communication would be more appropriate), how to keep the meeting on focus and reflecting on your meetings afterwards.

Professional registration
In Laurence Dawkins-Hall’s Thursday afternoon workshop on top tips for completing the competency forms for professional technical registration, participants were provided with a step-by-step explanation of the different competencies, followed by a discussion on the specific ways to evidence the competencies within their roles.

Top tips included thinking about different areas where you may use particular skills, not just your day to day tasks, and to think more holistically including wider information than lab or “science” skills. Laurence also encouraged everyone to think about how they would like to approach the competency form – e.g. by using one example that evidences all of the competencies or by addressing each of the competencies in turn with different, smaller examples.

Careers Cafe
On Friday a “Careers Café” rounded off the week over lunchtime with an informal panel discussion with technical representatives from three of the eight institutions.

Panellists shared their career highs and lows, challenges and their advice for others and answered questions from the audience.

What's coming up
Next week sees workshops from Jenna Shaw, from the University of Leicester on addressing group problem solving. This is ideal for anyone who needs to facilitate shared problem solving such as formally within team or department meetings or informal situations such as within a small team as problems arise.

On Friday morning Sandy Sparks is facilitating a workshop on updating and maximising LinkedIn profiles. There are limited places still available for these sessions, but what better way to spend half term week than with some learning and development.

We look forward to seeing you next week.
