Festival of Learning Reaches More Midlands Technicians

One big idea. Three weeks. Eight universities. 15 online training courses.

Thank you to everyone who joined our first ever Festival of Learning. More than 140 workshop places were used and 43 individuals joined the TALENT training courses for the first time.

Some of the event highlights include a ‘Learning Café discussing the topic of ‘Collaboration’. Two topics that really sparked an interesting discussion were:

  • Enabling apprentices to collaborate across departmental and institutional boundaries
  • Technicians receiving credit and attribution in scientific scholarly reports

These themes mirror some of the research themes which have been identified by the TALENT research team leading on the dedicated Policy Commission to advance the status and career opportunities for technicians. Read more about the Commission here.

One of the most popular workshops was ‘Effective Meetings and Confidence to Chair Meetings’. 21 technicians took part in the sessions and some of the feedback included:

I found it all useful and it helps condense the key tips that you should employ to effective in meetings. I am looking forward to utilising these

Useful tips on how to keep meetings moving and the importance of an agenda

The problem solving sessions were also very popular. Feedback included:

The overview of the different approaches to problem solving were very interesting

Learnt lots of things I did not know. Now need to apply them!

The café concluded three weeks of focussed learning and networking for many technicians across the eight Midlands Innovation universities.

The MI TALENT team are really encouraged by the collaboration with the Learning and Organisational Development teams and by the diversity and volume of new (and now familiar) participants. The programme was not all about getting as many participants as possible. It is hoped that everyone who attended will have left feeling empowered to further develop their work within their technical community and also inspired to reach out beyond their current workplace in order to make a difference.

If you were unable to attend the Festival of Learning, there are several e-learning modules available here until the end of June.
